California Memory Wins 2012 Hong Kong Cup – Race Results

December 11th, 2012

The 2012 Hong Kong Cup has been won by California Memory at Sha Tin Racecourse on Sunday December 9, 2012.

California Memory has now won the previous two editions of the Hong Kong Cup, with the Hong Kong local once again showing his true talent over the 2,000 metres.

French galloper Giofra finished second, while Australian stayer Alcopop placed a gallant third against a field full of international superstars.

Alcopop earned himself more than $310,000 for his third placing in the 2012 Hong Kong Cup and is the best performed Australian in Hong Kong in 10 years.

The eight-year-old has now won 10 of his 34 race starts and has earned more than $2 million in prize money during his horse racing career.

The Jeune gelding enjoyed a fantastic spring campaign, in which he placed second in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup and won the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington Racecourse on November 3.

Alcopop will now fly back to Australia for a date with the paddock, where he will remain until the spring racing carnival in 2013.

Part owner John Kelton was thrilled with the result, however, was not surprised.

“We’ve known for a long time he’s a very good and very brave horse,” Kelton said.

Trainer Jake Stephens was overwhelmed after watching Alcopop claim a placing in the prestigious 2012 Hong Kong Cup.

“I can’t believe how well everything’s gone,” Stephens said.

“He’s been a perfect traveller, better than plenty of others from what I’ve seen.

“The thing about him is that he is a racehorse, he’s got some ability and he uses it all.”
