Archimedes Ready for 2014 Hong Kong Cup

December 11th, 2014

Contesting just three competitive race starts over his short racing career so-far, talented Japanese runner Archimedes has reportedly taken well to his time and work since arriving in Hong Kong last week for Sunday’s Group 1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Claiming impressive results in his first two appearances on course, it was Archimedes’ most recent appearance on course in March which ultimately stamped him as a serious 2014 Hong Kong Cup contender; finishing second to the world’s leading racehorse Just A Way in the Group 2 Nakayama Kinen (1810m) at Nakaya.

Having reportedly taken particularly well to work over the last three months, assistant trainer Toshiya Kubo said he does not believe the first-up nature of Archimedes’ 2014 Hong Kong Cup tilt will spoil his chances of success, and is confident his horse is capable of a maiden victory at the highest level on Sunday.

“I was worried about the traveling, because he sometimes has temperament issues,” Kubo said.

“But he travelled with other stablemates and he has settled down.

“This is his first race up since March but we have given him some tough workouts recently and cantered him even in the morning of the departure day.

“He is a very talented horse and hopefully we can keep the good condition.”

Claiming several strong barrier trials in the lead-up to his racing debut, Archimedes finished a credible third behind Just A Way and Olivine in the Group 3 Arlington Cup (1609m) in his first competitive appearance on February 25th 2012; returning to racing for victory in the Group 3 Challenge Cup (1810m) in late 2013.

Leading online bookie is currently offering the best odds on the 2014 Hong Kong Cup, for which Archimedes can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $10 for success; figuring as tied fifth favourite alongside classy French raider Cirrus Des Aigles.
