Having secured several impressive victories at the highest level this year, local runner Designs On Rome ($3.50) has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite in 2014 Hong Kong Cup betting markets ahead of Military Attack ($3.80), Farraaj ($7) and Archimedes ($7.50) with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.

Will Designs On Rome justify favouritism and win the 2014 Hong Kong Cup, or will one of his many classy rivals find the line in the clear?

1st

Military Attack ($3.80)

A proven performer over both the course and distance, Military Attack will leave from barrier 8 in the 2014 Hong Kong Cup and is more than worth consideration for a bet at $3.80 for success. Securing 12 wins and a further eight minor places from his 32 competitive starts so far, Military Attack ran a credible fourth in the 2013 edition of the Hong Kong Cup, and continued to build in form and classy on his way to a standout victory in the Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) and close second place finish in the Group 1 QEII Cup (2000m) most notably. Having won the Group 2 Sha Tin Trophy (1600m) and finished second in the Group 2 Jockey Club Cup (2000m) this time in, all signs point towards another competitive performance from Military Attack this weekend.

2nd

Designs On Rome ($3.50)

Securing Hong Kong horse of the year honours earlier this season, Designs On Rome has been allocated the ideal barrier 3 and is an excellent chance of finishing in the 2014 Hong Kong Cup top three. Finishing outside the places only a handful of time in his 17 start career, the Holy Roman Emperor gelding finished second in the Group 1 Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) on January 19th before taking out each of the Group 1 Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m), Group 1 Hong Kong Derby (2000m) and QEII Cup in succession. While yet to hit peak condition over three starts this time, trainer John Moore is confident Designs On Rome will line up for the 2014 Hong Kong Cup in peak condition.

3rd

Criterion ($12)

Returning to racing in typically competitive form through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, sole Australian entrant Criterion is a two-time Group 1 winner, a proven performer over the distance and arguably offers punters the best value for money in Hong Kong Cup betting markets at $12 odds for success. A standout performer over the 2014 Autumn having taken out both the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m), the Sebring entire was unlucky not to break through for a race win over six impressive spring starts, but arguably completed his most impressive run when finishing an agonizingly close second to Fawkner in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on October 11th.
