2015 Hong Kong Cup May Figure for Contributer

July 17th, 2015

Trainer John O’Shea has been understandably thrilled with the results posted by Contributer this year and has revealed the featured 2015 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin may figure for the stallion following the Spring Carnival.

Contributer stamped his claims as a one to watch upon debuting to racing during last year’s Spring Carnival but undoubtedly stamped his claims as one to watch through the recent Sydney Autumn Carnival; taking out each of the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

Confirming the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 24th remains his major spring target; O’Shea told Racing Ahead he is thrilled with the continually building form of the son of High Chaparral and believes he is more than capable of success in a race like the 2015 Hong Kong Cup should his spring results warrant a trip.

“He’s a horse that’s made significant improvement and he’s really furnished into a lovely horse now,” O’Shea said.

“I’m really happy with where he’s at and although he’s been here for two preparations he’s only had the five runs for us.

“We’ve got a good understanding of where he’s at and I think we’ll kick him off in the old Feehan Stakes which will be one of two runs into the Cox Plate.

“I thought third-up last time he was by far and away at his best and we’ll endeavour to have him ready third-up this time and we’ll give him one run where he has a look at the Valley to see if he’s adaptable to it.

“If he gives us every indication that he handles it then the Cox Plate will be his main mission, if he doesn’t then we’ll reassess and he will be nominated for Hong Kong.”

Contributer was a strong and consistent performer for British trainer Ed Dunlop through the early stages of his career, and arrived in Australian for immediate success in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) before failing to handle the late pace when eighth in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
