Oliver Pleased to Partner Lucia Valentina in 2015 Hong Kong Cup

November 30th, 2015

Damien Oliver is pleased to have been retained for the ride on Lucia Valentina in the 2015 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) in December, and believes the mare’s recent work suggests she is capable of a competitive display in the Sha Tin feature.

Oliver partnered Lucia Valentina in her most recent run in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Stakes Day, and proved the decisive force in the mare’s impressive return to the winner’s circle when his decision to push to the outside fence rounding onto the final straight paid dividends.

Trainer Kris Lees has kept Oliver up to date with the condition of the classy daughter of Savabeel since their win in the Matriarch Stakes and the hoop is growing in anticipation for the 2015 Hong Kong Cup as a result.

“Kris sent me some footage of her doing work the other morning,” Oliver told Racing Ahead.

“She looked fantastic. He said she’s freshened up really well with the month off, and she goes there in great form.”

Lucia Valentina has been a strong and consistent performer since first appearing on course competitively for Stephen Marsh in her native New Zealand in 2013; posting an impressive career total of six wins and five minors through twenty-four starts.

Capping her New Zealand career second in the 2014 edition of the Group 2 Royal Stakes (2000m), Lucia Valentina debuted in Australia for third in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m), and while only managing twelfth in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), responded in the best way possible with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

Returning to the paddock after placing third in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) during The Championships, Lucia Valentina continued to impress through the 2014 Spring Carnival; winning each of the Group 2 Tramway Handicap (1400m) and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and finishing third in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) most notably.

Unable to make much of a competitive impact in 2015 prior to the Matriarch Stakes, Lucia Valentina is currently available at 2015 Hong Kong Cup odds of $14 for success with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
